Diversity & Inclusion

STAT is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We strive to create a culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates all voices. A staff that reflects the world around us makes for better — and more accurate — journalism.

The STAT Diversity and Inclusion Committee is proud to present STAT’s first Diversity and Inclusion Report – read our Inaugural Diversity Report (2015 – 2022) here.

Diversity in our journalism starts with diversity in our office

The emphasis on and encouragement of diversity and inclusion at STAT is spearheaded by a committee of 10 employees that is refreshed annually. The mission of this committee is to make STAT and our reporting better reflect the world that we live in. We are dedicated to:

  • Regularly reevaluate the hiring and recruiting processes to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are held as top priorities in all decisions.
  • Ensure that the concerns and opinions of all staff will be valued and that STAT leadership will be receptive to that feedback.
  • Keep the staff regularly informed of its work, through publicly sharing meeting notes and details of any initiatives.
  • Create a more inclusive work environment where everyone feels they can be their authentic selves.

We work to carry this inclusion into our editorial initiatives

Diversifying our sources STAT has implemented a source survey to better measure and track the diversity of voices we quote in our reporting, with a focus on incorporating historically underrepresented populations.

Diversifying our staff and events We have taken steps towards further diversifying our staff and speakers at our events. In summer of 2021, we established the Sharon Begley Fellowship, a joint program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for early-career U.S. journalists from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in science journalism.

Diversifying the sorts of stories we’re telling Health equity is central to our coverage here at STAT and we produce journalism that covers issues of racism and social justice in health care and life sciences. Check out a few of our stories that amplify diverse voices below.
