About STAT

In November 2015, STAT was launched as a new national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source for tough-minded coverage of the business of making medicines, health tech, science, and public health. We produce daily news, investigative articles, and narrative projects in addition to multimedia features, podcasts, and opinion pieces. Our team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named as a 2021 Pulitzer finalist. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.

The Role

STAT, the leading health and medicine publication, is looking for a motion designer/video producer to join our award-winning team. The ideal candidate has strong motion design skills, but can also operate a camera and has experience in non-linear editing. Our multimedia producers work collaboratively, so this position is ideal for candidates who are interested in immersing themselves and learning about all facets of visual and audio journalism.

What You’ll Do

  • Produce timely and engaging animated explainers to inform our audience about the most urgent health care issues in a smart, yet accessible fashion.
  • Help develop a creative style for new video platforms.
  • Create still graphics and illustrations to accompany our stories.
  • Work cooperatively with multimedia journalists on other projects including documentary shorts, podcasts, and live events, including the opportunity to travel for stories and on-site shoots.

Who You Are

  • An early-career, versatile multimedia professional who is passionate about many facets of digital storytelling.
  • Someone with a passion for journalism and a desire to dive in on breaking news.
  • Someone with a creative and dynamic approach to video and motion graphics, especially for social media.
  • Comfortable with industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Illustrator and Photoshop. 3D experience is a plus. We use Cinema 4D, Element 3D, and occasionally Blender.
  • Someone who can take initiative with their own ideas but who also enjoys working collaboratively. All of our producers work closely with reporters and editors across the newsroom. Some experience in a newsroom is ideal, but candidates with a strong interest in learning how to pivot to visual journalism will also be considered.
  • Willing to adapt and be audience-focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

Compensation/Location

The minimum salary for this position is $60,000. We offer a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, a 401k plan, generous vacation, parental leave, and more. We also provide Care.com back-up care and have numerous wellness offerings, including free access to HeadSpace for all full time employees.

The STAT office is located in downtown Boston, nearby Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the US.
