Keaweʻaimoku Kaholokula

Chair of Native Hawaiian Health at Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

Increasing diversity in clinical research trials and tackling health inequities will require addressing the mistrust many people feel due to a long history of discrimination in medical research, Kaholokula believes. With a $20 million grant awarded last year by the American Heart Association, Gates Ventures, and Pfizer, Kaholokula will co-lead collaborators from nine universities and health care systems in examining what prevents people underrepresented in research, including Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, from participating in trials, and how to change that. The four-year study will focus on interventions for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
